APHIS just proposed expanding Philippine pineapple access to the U.S. — up to 19,200 tons a year

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has proposed expanded market access for fresh pineapples from the Philippines, which could allow exports of up to 19,200 tons annually to the United States. The proposal follows a formal request from the Philippines' Bureau of Plant Industry.

Pineapples are a high-volume tropical staple in North American retail and foodservice. The Philippines is already a global pineapple powerhouse, and expanded U.S. market access could introduce a significant new competitive supply source alongside established exporters from Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras.

This is a proposal stage — it would need to clear the regulatory approval process before affecting actual import volumes. Category managers and buyers in the tropical category should track this, as approval could meaningfully shift the competitive landscape for fresh pineapple sourcing and pricing over time.
