Produce had the steepest unit sales decline in grocery last month

June grocery unit sales came in mixed across categories, but produce posted the steepest decline of any department, according to new retail data reported by Supermarket News. The drop in units sold points to consumers actively buying less produce — not just shifting to cheaper options — as elevated prices continue to weigh on shopper behavior.

This is a meaningful signal for the industry. With produce prices running 20-32% higher year-over-year on key items like lettuce and tomatoes, demand destruction is starting to show up in the unit data. Shoppers who are already using savings and credit cards to cover grocery bills, as previously reported, are making harder tradeoffs in the produce aisle.

For category managers and salespeople, volume pressure from the demand side is now stacking on top of supply disruptions and cost inflation. Promotional strategy and value messaging will matter more than usual heading into the back half of summer — worth monitoring whether July data continues the trend.
