California grapes are running well ahead of last year — El Niño pushed the whole season forward

California's grape harvest is tracking close to nine million boxes shipped, running ahead of the same point last year. The early pace is being attributed to El Niño conditions that accelerated crop development not just in California but across multiple producing regions including Peru and Mexico.

For buyers and category managers, an early and heavy California grape season means promotional windows open sooner, but it also means the season could compress — peak supply hitting earlier than usual and thinning out before the fall transition. Monitoring sell-through rates in August will be important to avoid late-season glut pricing.

Table grape buyers should also watch how the California volume timing interacts with imported supply from Chile and Peru, which typically steps in as the domestic season winds down. If California runs ahead of pace now, there could be an inventory overlap to manage.
