Ahold Delhaize shut down the websites and online ordering platforms for all five of its U.S. retail banners — Food Lion, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, and The Giant Company — after detecting a cybersecurity incident on Sunday. The company also took some internal systems offline as a precautionary measure, while keeping all physical store locations open. Loyalty program discounts and app-linked savings were suspended, and electronic shelf labels in European stores were showing outdated prices.
The attack follows a broader pattern of cyberattacks hitting European grocery retail. A separate incident on Sunday caused refrigerators at hundreds of French supermarkets to heat to 122°F for approximately six hours, causing widespread food losses. UK chains Marks & Spencer and Co-op were also recently hit. Ahold Delhaize itself disclosed a November 2024 breach that affected over 2 million U.S. customers and disrupted deliveries, payments, and pharmacy operations.
For produce suppliers doing business with Ahold's U.S. banners, the immediate concern is order management and payment processing continuity while systems are offline.
