Mexico is currently shipping from its Flor Loca crop and the size distribution is skewed heavily toward smaller fruit — 60% of the current harvest is falling in the 60s and smaller sizes, with 30% in 60s, 20% in 70s, and 10% in 84s. Paul Weismann of Healthy Avocado Inc. notes that truck crossings into the U.S. were affected last week, adding a supply flow layer to the sizing challenge.
For buyers and category managers, this size curve matters at the shelf. Retail programs built around larger avocados will face tighter supply and likely higher per-unit costs on those sizes. The smaller size concentration could also affect foodservice portioning and value-pack SKUs.
This is a near-term procurement issue — buyers should be revisiting size commitments with their suppliers and watching whether the size curve corrects as the Flor Loca season progresses.
