Ontario greenhouse growers are watching retail prices climb — but almost none of it is reaching the farm

Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) is pushing back on a widespread misconception: that rising retail grocery prices are translating into better returns for growers. Recent industry data shows that greenhouse vegetable farmers are not seeing improved profitability despite what consumers are paying at the register.

The disconnect highlights how retail price inflation and farm-gate economics can move in completely opposite directions. Costs for inputs, energy, and labor remain elevated, while grower returns haven't kept pace with what's showing up on store shelves. The Leamington greenhouse belt in Ontario is a major supplier of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers to North American retail — so pressure on these growers has real supply implications.

This is worth monitoring for category managers sourcing greenhouse vegetables. If margin compression continues to squeeze Ontario operations, it could affect planting decisions and long-term availability for key protected-ag commodities.
