Wakefern is putting $500 million behind local produce sourcing — the commitment drops right before its supplier summit

Wakefern Food Corp has announced a $500 million commitment to sourcing fresh produce from local growers, timed ahead of its annual Local Produce Supplier Summit on July 15. The pledge signals a significant prioritization of regional supply relationships from one of the largest retailer-owned cooperatives in the U.S.

Wakefern operates ShopRite and other banners primarily across the Northeast, a region where local sourcing carries strong consumer resonance. A commitment of this size, made public ahead of a supplier-facing event, suggests the cooperative is actively looking to deepen grower partnerships and potentially expand its local procurement base.

For growers and regional distributors in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, this is worth paying attention to heading into the summer and fall seasons. The July 15 summit may surface more specific category priorities and sourcing windows.
