Peru's blueberry industry is growing bigger — but El Niño could complicate the whole season

Peru's blueberry sector is heading into the 2026/27 season with an expanded production base while simultaneously facing uncertainty from potential El Niño conditions. Peru's Multisectoral Commission on the El Niño Phenomenon has flagged the possibility of Coastal El Niño development, which could affect growing conditions in key producing regions.

Peru is the largest single source of blueberries exported to the U.S., and the sector has been projecting record volumes this cycle. El Niño conditions in Peru's coastal growing zones can bring excessive heat and erratic rainfall, which affect both yield and fruit quality — potentially disrupting what had been a bullish supply outlook.

This is a developing situation worth tracking closely. Buyers planning promotions or volume commitments around peak Peruvian supply windows should factor in the possibility of tighter or uneven availability if weather conditions deteriorate.
