Europe now eats almost as many avocados as the U.S. Here's what that means for global supply.

Europe's avocado consumption is closing in on the United States, hitting just over 1.2 million metric tons this year compared to roughly 1.4 million in the U.S. — a gap that has narrowed significantly in recent years. What's notable is how the market held up under pressure: in March and April, record volumes of up to 7 million boxes a week hit the European market without a price collapse, signaling that demand has genuinely deepened rather than just expanded on paper.

Zac Bard, chairman of the World Avocado Organisation, says the lesson from Europe is that consumer education drives real, durable demand growth. Markets where consumers understand how to ripen, cut, and cook with avocados — and where promotions are tailored to local cuisine — absorb volume in a way that untargeted supply drops simply don't. WAO is now eyeing India and broader Asia as the next frontier, with India already seeing Hass plantings emerge in the Western Ghats.

For North American buyers, a healthier European market means more global demand absorbing supply — which matters when California and Mexico are both running strong volume. Worth monitoring whether continued European demand growth helps stabilize pricing during peak supply windows that have historically created volatility.
