New Section 301 tariffs are live — produce got some exemptions, but the industry is split on whether it's enough

USTR's final action on the Section 301 forced labor investigation went into effect July 24, and IFPA is reporting that the new tariff structure includes broad exemptions for certain produce categories. Items like bananas and avocados landed on the exemption list, drawing relief from some corners of the industry — but others are calling the remaining levies unnecessary trade barriers.

The reaction across the fresh produce industry has been mixed, ranging from gratitude over protected categories to frustration over commodities left exposed. The tariffs add another layer of cost pressure on top of an already inflation-stressed supply chain, where fresh vegetable prices are already running 9% above year-ago levels.

This is a fast-moving situation — worth tracking which specific commodities face new cost exposure and how importers respond over the coming weeks. Buyers sourcing from affected origins should be in active conversation with their suppliers now.
