Canada just committed $1 billion to fresh produce infrastructure. The Ontario Food Terminal is a direct beneficiary.

The Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) welcomed the Government of Canada's announcement of the $1 billion Food-Link Fund, a component of Canada's National Food Security Strategy. The fund will invest in two streams of critical food security infrastructure: food terminals and regional food hubs. The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.

CPMA president Ron Lemaire said the investment reflects the association's year-long advocacy for federal support for the Ontario Food Terminal — one of the most important fresh produce distribution nodes in North America — and for regional food hubs across Canada. The initiative is framed as part of the government's broader Build Canada economic strategy.

For suppliers moving product into Canadian retail and foodservice channels, upgraded terminal and hub infrastructure could improve receiving efficiency and cold chain reliability over time. Worth monitoring how implementation details roll out, particularly around the Ontario Food Terminal, which handles significant volumes of U.S.-origin fresh produce.
