A blueberry supply gap is opening up — California heat, Mexico's slowdown, and a late PNW start all hit at once

A convergence of supply disruptions is creating a short-term hole in the blueberry market. California volumes were knocked back by heat, Mexico is past its peak and winding down, and the Pacific Northwest season is getting off to a slow start — all at the same time.

Blueberries have been one of the most promoted fresh categories heading into summer, which makes a supply gap especially painful for retailers with commitments on the books. The overlap of regional transitions is a recurring seasonal vulnerability, but this year the timing appears particularly tight.

Watch for spot prices to firm in the near term. Category managers with flexible sourcing should monitor PNW progression and consider whether Chilean or Canadian volume can fill the gap before domestic supply stabilizes.
