A Utah hailstorm wiped out 15 hectares of onions — one farm's financial hit is a preview of broader supply risk

A hailstorm in Utah's Box Elder County has caused substantial damage to an onion crop at Russ Fowers Farms, a 267-acre family operation growing onions, corn, and pumpkins. Approximately 15 hectares of onions were affected, resulting in significant financial losses for the growers.

While this is a single-farm event, hail damage to field crops can have outsized effects on localized supply windows, particularly when it hits just as seasonal demand is building. Onions are a high-volume staple across retail and foodservice, and any supply disruption in key Western growing areas tends to move markets.

It's worth watching whether additional hail or severe weather events affect other onion-growing areas this summer — a pattern of weather damage across multiple farms or regions could tighten supply and push pricing higher.
