Taco Bell went lettuce-free for a day — and it's a signal of how the Cyclospora fallout is spreading

Taco Bell promoted $1 Enchiritos — a flour tortilla filled item containing no lettuce — through its social media channels on July 22, explicitly timed during the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak. The move is notable because it represents a major QSR openly acknowledging consumer anxiety around lettuce and capitalizing on it in real time.

The Cyclospora outbreak has already rattled the supply chain, with Taylor Farms pulling Central Mexico iceberg and the FDA investigation still ongoing without a confirmed source. Now foodservice operators are adjusting menus and marketing in response, which adds another layer of demand pressure on an already disrupted category.

For produce salespeople and category managers in the leafy greens space, this is worth watching closely. If large QSR chains start routinely promoting lettuce-free items during the outbreak, the demand signal could suppress leafy green movement through foodservice channels even after the investigation wraps.
