Mushrooms are oversupplied and demand is falling — Canadian growers are sounding the alarm

Canadian mushroom growers are facing a double hit: oversupply and declining consumption. Mike Medeiros of Carleton Mushroom Farms was direct about it — "There's an oversupply of mushrooms right now and unfortunately consumption is down." He pointed to several factors contributing to weak adoption of mushrooms as a mainstream vegetable.

Mushrooms are a meaningful volume category in North American produce, and persistent oversupply combined with soft demand creates a difficult environment for growers and buyers alike. Pricing pressure is likely as growers compete for shelf space and promotional placement.

For retail buyers, this could be a moment to negotiate better terms or secure promotional pricing to drive trial and volume. For salespeople, understanding why consumption is lagging — and how to address it at store level — may be the more important question to bring to retail partners.
