El Niño is squeezing Peru's mandarin crop — lower volumes and slow color development are both problems

Weather conditions associated with El Niño are already hitting several of Peru's mandarin growing regions, creating one of the most difficult production environments in recent years. Beyond volume impacts, the weather is slowing down color development — a quality issue that complicates export timing and market presentation.

Peru is a meaningful supplier of mandarins and citrus to North American and global markets during the Northern Hemisphere off-season. Supply disruptions here, especially when combined with other citrus pressures already in the market, can tighten availability and push prices higher for importers and buyers.

This is worth watching closely given that El Niño impacts on Peruvian crops have already been flagged across blueberries and other categories. Buyers sourcing Peruvian citrus should be in close contact with suppliers about timing and quality expectations for the coming months.
