6.5 million households stopped buying salad in July — $280M in produce spending is on the line every month this continues

New data shows the Cyclospora outbreak linked to Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce caused 6.5 million U.S. households to pause salad purchases in July, putting an estimated $280 million in monthly produce spending at risk. The figures come from consumer research tracking purchasing behavior in the wake of the outbreak, which has now sickened nearly 9,500 people across 17 states.

While FDA has confirmed that all recalled lettuce is off shelves, the consumer confidence damage is proving far harder to contain than the product itself. Shoppers are pulling back from bagged salads and leafy greens broadly, not just the implicated SKUs — a pattern consistent with past foodborne illness events where guilt-by-association suppresses entire categories.

Watch for this data to drive retailer conversations about how to rebuild shopper trust in the category heading into fall. Any prolonged pullback at this scale will pressure category volume numbers through at least Q3, and buyers managing leafy green sets should be prepared for continued softness even as supply normalizes.
