Bell peppers are seeing a flood of supply

Bell pepper markets are under pressure right now due to an abundance of supply, particularly on colored varieties. Francisco Clouthier of Maui Fresh International LLC, which ships peppers from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, says the oversupply situation is creating real challenges for sellers trying to move product at profitable prices.

Colored bell peppers — reds, yellows, and oranges — typically command a premium over greens, so when those markets soften, it hits grower and shipper margins more meaningfully. Multi-origin supply coming in simultaneously is a common driver of these gluts during the summer transition period.

Buyers with flexible programs may find good value opportunities right now. Worth monitoring whether this supply pressure persists as summer demand picks up or eases naturally as the season progresses.
