California onion prices are holding strong this summer — and there's no supply surge in sight

Pricing on San Joaquin Valley onions has strengthened compared to earlier in the year, driven by lower overall supply. Mindy VanVleck of Peri & Sons Farms says the market has been fairly strong this summer and she doesn't see an influx of supply on the horizon that would change that dynamic.

California is a key onion-producing region for summer supply, and tighter availability here directly affects national pricing. After an already volatile onion market earlier this season, the current stability at higher price levels reflects real supply constraints rather than speculative movement.

Buyers with onion programs running through late summer should factor in continued firmness when planning. Worth monitoring whether other growing regions see any acceleration that could shift the balance.
