U.S. potato stocks are down 2% year-over-year — and stored supplies are a smaller share of last year's crop

USDA's latest Potato Stocks Report shows U.S. potato stocks at 54.7 million hundredweight as of June 1, down 2% from the same point a year ago. Stored potatoes represent 13% of 2025 production, a smaller share than in prior years.

Stocks data at this point in the season helps set the tone for fresh potato supply availability and pricing as the country bridges toward new crop harvest. A 2% year-over-year decline is modest but meaningful — especially if demand holds steady or grows heading into the summer grilling season.

Buyers and category managers sourcing fresh-market potatoes should monitor whether this tighter inventory position translates into firmer pricing before new crop arrives. The data comes from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, released June 18.
